📖 Partial Quotients, the Monster Way

Monster Party is a partial quotient division game for 4th and 5th grade. Monsters share piles of weird snacks (socks, rocks, spiders, pizza) equally, and students decide how many each monster gobbles in every round.

What is the partial quotients method? Instead of finding the whole answer at once, students subtract "friendly" chunks of the divisor (like 10 groups, then 5 more, then 2 more) and add the chunks up at the end. For 240 ÷ 17: take 10 each (170), then 4 each (68), leaving 2, so 10 + 4 = 14 R2. It is sometimes called the big 7 or hangman method, and it builds the place-value thinking students need for long division.

What students do

  • Build the partial quotients ladder one round at a time, with each multiplication shown (10 × 17 = 170).
  • Three levels: 1-digit divisors (4.NBT.B.6), divisors 11–25, and divisors 26–50 (5.NBT.B.6).
  • Remainders left on the table, or split into fractions (5.NF.B.3) in Plan Your Own Party.
  • Party hats reward bigger, smarter chunks: fewer rounds means more hats.

For the classroom

  • Printable worksheets: Teacher Mode prints 4 or 6 word problems with blank ladders on grid paper and a full answer key.
  • Board and paper match: after printing, the game loads the same problems, and a 4-character set code reloads the sheet on any computer.
  • English and Spanish, read-aloud, keyboard friendly, and sized for phones, Chromebooks, and classroom projectors.
